Te mapa
Yancheng lies on the coastal plain of northern Jiangsu, and its name, salt city, recalls the salt making that once shaped this shoreline. The land is almost completely flat, so water draws the map. Rivers, canals and drainage channels run across it in long lines, and the city has grown along them in broad, regular blocks.
The Chuanchang River flows through the centre and was historically a route for carrying salt. Newer districts extend in large rectangular sectors with wide roads and parks. To the east, the countryside runs out to the Yellow Sea coast. There, mudflats and salt marshes stretch far from the shore, and the line between land and sea is hard to draw.
These coastal wetlands are part of the Migratory Bird Sanctuaries along the Coast of Yellow Sea-Bohai Gulf of China, listed by UNESCO in 2019. They include reserves for red-crowned cranes and Père David's deer. A Yancheng map poster centred on the city shows an orderly grid shaped by water, with the coast lying further to the east.
The historic waterway runs north to south through the city and once linked the old salt works. Its flowing line contrasts with the straighter modern roads.
Across the flat plain, rivers and irrigation channels run in parallel lines. They create a regular pattern that surrounds the city on every side.
Newer parts of Yancheng are laid out in large, even blocks with broad avenues and landscaped parks, which gives the map a spacious, orderly structure.
