Valley-floor town
The streets are concentrated on the flat ground of the valley and stretch lengthwise, so the town looks long and narrow rather than round.

Te mapa
Yanguan lies in southeastern Gansu, in the hilly country between the loess plateau and the mountains of the Qinling range. On a map, settlements in this region follow the valleys closely. The built-up area stretches along the flat valley floor, while the ridges on both sides are cut into terraced fields and marked mainly by winding roads.
The name Yanguan means roughly "salt office", a reminder that salt production was once important in parts of this region. Beyond that, detailed information in English is scarce, so this page describes the town mainly through its landscape. The overall pattern is a linear town shaped by its valley and the river running through it.
A Yanguan map poster suits the simple geometry of a valley settlement. A central band of streets follows the watercourse, and the land around it breaks into the fine curves of terraces and ridges, a pattern that shows up clearly in black and white.
The streets are concentrated on the flat ground of the valley and stretch lengthwise, so the town looks long and narrow rather than round.
A river runs through the valley and sets the direction of the main road and most of the built-up area along its banks.
Hillsides around the town are shaped into agricultural terraces, which show on the map as finely curved lines that follow the contours.

Koteā ko Yanguan
For people from rural Gansu who now live in Lanzhou, Xi'an or farther away, a map of Yanguan shows the valley they grew up in more clearly than any photograph. It makes a sincere, understated gift.
