Te mapa
Yany Kapu lies in the north of the Crimean peninsula, on the flat steppe close to the Perekop Isthmus that joins Crimea to the mainland. The name is Crimean Tatar, and the town is also widely known as Krasnoperekopsk. From above, it appears as a compact settlement of regular residential blocks, bounded by open steppe, farmland and shallow salt lakes.
The town developed in the twentieth century around chemical industry that draws on the mineral resources of the nearby lakes, and large industrial sites sit apart from the residential districts. On a map, the planned layout, with its straight streets and apartment blocks, contrasts sharply with the irregular outlines of the lakes and the wide, empty land around them.
A Yany Kapu map poster shows the town as a clear, ordered shape on an open landscape, framed by water and steppe. It suits people who grew up here and have since moved elsewhere, as well as anyone drawn to the stark geometry of small planned towns on the edge of flat, open country.
Shallow salt lakes lie close to the town, their irregular shorelines forming the most striking natural shapes on the map and a strong contrast to the streets.
Residential districts are laid out in a regular pattern of streets and apartment blocks, a clear geometric grid typical of towns built in the twentieth century.
Large industrial sites stand apart from the housing areas, their big footprints and service roads adding bold, blocky shapes to the composition.
