Te mapa
Yasugi lies in the east of Shimane Prefecture, on the southern shore of Lake Nakaumi, a large brackish lagoon connected to the Sea of Japan. The map shows a town squeezed between water and hills: the built-up area follows the lakeshore and the railway line, while rice fields and wooded slopes rise to the south. Rivers flow down from the hills and cut across the plain to reach the lake.
The town is famous for the Adachi Museum of Art, whose carefully composed Japanese garden has been ranked the best in Japan in repeated surveys. Yasugi is also known for Yasugi-bushi, a folk song accompanied by the comic dojo-sukui loach-scooping dance, and for a long tradition of steelmaking rooted in the region's historic tatara iron smelting.
A Yasugichō map poster captures the balance between lake, plain and hills that defines this part of the San'in coast. The shoreline gives it a clear northern edge, the town's streets form a narrow band along it, and the rivers and valleys lead the eye inland. In black and white, the composition feels calm and orderly, in keeping with the famous garden nearby.
The broad lagoon forms the northern edge of the map, its smooth shoreline a strong contrast to the fine street pattern of the town.
Rivers run from the southern hills across the flat plain to Nakaumi, forming soft, winding lines between fields and neighbourhoods.
South of the centre, the museum and its celebrated gardens sit at the foot of the hills, where the landscape was borrowed into the garden design.

Koteā ko Yasugichō
Yasugi appeals to garden lovers who have visited the Adachi Museum, to people from Shimane living elsewhere in Japan and to anyone drawn to the quieter side of the country. Its composition feels peaceful and balanced on a wall.
