Yongping lies in the southeastern part of Gansu Province, a region of steep hills, terraced slopes and narrow river valleys. Settlements here usually follow the flat ground along the valley floor. Seen from above, the town is long and narrow, with the hills on either side leaving only limited room to spread.
The streets follow the valley's main road, with shorter lanes branching off towards the slopes. Around the town, the land breaks into terraces and ridgelines. On a map this shows up as a finely broken surface and makes the small street network look even more clearly defined.
