Te mapa
Youri Kourtéré is in the Tillabéri Region of western Niger, close to the capital, Niamey, and to the Niger River, which flows through this part of the Sahel. The land is flat and dry for much of the year, and on a map the settlement appears as a spread of streets and compounds on open ground rather than a tight urban core.
Streets here are often unpaved tracks, and the plan combines straight lines laid out in newer neighbourhoods with more irregular paths between older compounds. Around the settlement, fields and open scrub stretch out, turning green in the rainy season and dry for the rest of the year. The river valley is the main feature of the region's landscape.
A Youri Kourtéré map poster shows a Sahelian community in simple, honest lines: tracks, blocks and the wide landscape around them. It is a personal image for people connected to the place, and it records a part of the world that rarely appears on printed maps.
The settlement spreads across the plain in a loose arrangement of blocks and compounds, with generous space between them that gives the map an airy character.
Sandy streets and paths link homes, fields and neighbouring communities, forming a mix of straight and meandering lines across the frame.
The settlement belongs to the river valley near Niamey, and a wider frame shows its connection to the broad Niger and the capital nearby.
