Zeya lies in Russia's Amur Oblast, on the river of the same name, where it leaves the hills of the Tukuringra range. The town began in the late nineteenth century as a landing for the gold fields upriver. On a map, its streets form a fairly regular grid on the riverbank, with taiga-covered slopes rising behind.
Just upstream, the Zeya Hydroelectric Station closes the valley. The dam holds back the Zeya Reservoir, one of the largest artificial lakes in Russia, which stretches far north into the hills. The map clearly shows the contrast between the narrow river below the dam and the wide reservoir above it.

Hydroelectric dam
The Zeya dam blocks the valley just upstream of the town. On the map, it is a short, sharp line between river and reservoir.
