The map
Xunyang is a county-level city in Ankang, in southern Shaanxi, set in the deep valley of the Han River between the Qinling range to the north and the Daba Mountains to the south. Its name comes from the Xun River, a tributary that joins the Han here. The map is defined by that meeting of rivers and by the narrow strip of land they leave for building.
From above, the city looks less like a grid than a series of terraces and ribbons. Streets follow the curve of the riverbanks and climb wherever they can, and bridges tie the two sides together. The mountains press so close that the outline of the valley becomes the outline of the town. Beyond the edges, roads wind through side valleys in long switchbacks.
A Xunyang map poster captures a place where geography sets every rule. The broad band of the Han River gives the print a bold, sweeping curve, and the dense, irregular streets on the slopes add fine texture. The map looks striking even to people who have never visited.
The Han River crosses the frame as a wide, curving band. It is the strongest shape on the poster and the line the rest of the city is arranged around.
The smaller Xun River comes down from the Qinling to join the Han. The fork of water divides the town into separate districts that are linked by bridges.
Outside the centre, roads trace the valleys in twisting lines, a reminder of the rugged terrain that surrounds the city on every side.
