About this Žatec map poster
Žatec lies in northwest Bohemia, on a terrace above the river Ohře. The historic centre occupies the high ground as a compact oval of streets around a large square, and remnants of the town walls trace its edge. Below, the river swings past in wide bends, and the newer districts spread across the flatter land around it.
The town is known worldwide for Saaz hops, the aromatic variety grown in the surrounding countryside and prized by brewers. Tall hop kilns, warehouses and packing halls still mark the streets near the centre. In 2023 Žatec and the landscape of Saaz hops were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
