Zhaotong lies in the far northeast of Yunnan Province, close to the borders with Sichuan and Guizhou, in a high plateau basin. From above, the city occupies an unusually flat piece of ground in otherwise mountainous country, and its streets extend across the basin floor in a largely regular pattern before thinning into farmland toward the surrounding slopes.
The older core in Zhaoyang, the central district, has closer and less regular streets, while newer districts on the edges are organised into long, wide blocks typical of recent Chinese urban growth. Main roads run in straight lines across the basin, which makes the layout easy to read on a map even at a large scale.
