Žiar nad Hronom lies in central Slovakia on the Hron river, between the Štiavnica and Kremnica mountains. For centuries it was called Svätý Kríž nad Hronom. After the Second World War it was rebuilt around a large aluminium smelter and renamed, and it grew quickly as an industrial town.
