The map
Zinjibār is the capital of Abyan Governorate in southern Yemen, lying close to the Gulf of Aden, east of the city of Aden. The land around it is flat and low, part of a delta formed by seasonal wadis that come down from the highlands. On a map the town is a compact cluster of blocks surrounded by fields and irrigation channels.
The Abyan delta has long been one of the more productive farming areas of southern Yemen. It is watered by floods from Wadi Bana and other wadis and was known in the past for cotton. The nearby coastline is straight and sandy, and roads from Zinjibār run along it toward Aden in one direction and further east in the other.
A Zinjibār map poster presents the town in its setting: the blocks of the centre, the pale geometry of the fields around it and the long line of the sea along one edge. The town has been through hard years of conflict, and for many families a map of its streets is a way of keeping the place intact on paper.
Irrigated plots and channels fed by seasonal floods spread across the plain around Zinjibār, giving the map a patterned, agricultural texture beyond the town.
A straight sandy shoreline runs a short distance from the town, forming a clean edge that anchors the composition and hints at the open sea.
The broad bed of Wadi Bana, which brings seasonal water down from the highlands, crosses the delta close to the town as a wide pale band.

Why Zinjibār
