The map
Zvolen lies in the Zvolen Basin in central Slovakia, at the confluence of the Hron and Slatina rivers, surrounded by forested hills. The town grew up where important routes crossed, and its plan still shows it. A long, broad main square forms the spine of the historic centre, and roads and railway lines fan out from it along the valleys in several directions.
At the southern end of the square stands Zvolen Castle, a Gothic royal residence built in the fourteenth century for King Louis I of Hungary. On a wooded hill above the rivers lie the ruins of Pustý hrad, among the largest castle ruins in Central Europe. The town is also home to the Technical University in Zvolen, known for forestry and wood sciences.
A Zvolen map poster brings together river, hills and history. The Hron and Slatina curve through the lower parts of the map, the square stands out as a long open shape in the centre, and the forest comes close on several sides. The railway junction adds clean, sweeping lines that balance the organic shapes of the rivers.
The main square is unusually long and wide. It runs through the centre like an elongated plaza, with the castle at its southern end.
The Hron and Slatina meet near the town. Their valleys guide the roads and railways and give the map its main natural lines.
A wooded hill above the town holds the extensive ruins of a medieval castle complex, shown on the map as open forest crossed by paths.
