The map
Al Qanāyāt is a town in Sharqia Governorate, in the eastern Nile Delta, near the provincial capital Zagazig. The land here is flat and cultivated field by field. That shapes the map. Irrigation canals run in long lines across the countryside, and the town is a dense mass of buildings set among them.
In the Delta, water decides where roads go. Paths and lanes often follow canal banks, and farm plots are divided into long, thin parcels that show up as fine parallel lines. The town's streets are close and irregular, typical of Delta settlements that grew out of villages over many generations.
An Al Qanāyāt map poster captures that agricultural geometry. A tight urban core contrasts with the regular pattern of the fields and waterways around it. Printed in black and white, the canals become fine ruled lines, and the town reads as a solid island among them. It's a subtle, finely drawn image of life in the Delta.
Channels cut straight lines through the surrounding farmland. They are the strongest geometric element in the composition and guide many of the roads beside them.
Closely packed buildings and narrow lanes form a compact centre, which reads as the heaviest area of ink against the more open fields.
Long, narrow plots and farm tracks create fine parallel textures around the town, typical of the intensely cultivated eastern Nile Delta.
