The map

About this Armilla map poster

Armilla lies just south of Granada, on the fertile plain known as the Vega. The city has grown right up to its northern border, so the streets of Armilla and Granada join almost without a gap. The older core is a small tangle of lanes around the church, surrounded by newer blocks, housing estates and wide suburban roads.

The largest shape on the map is the air base, a long straight runway with aprons and service roads laid out beside it. Ring roads and motorway junctions cut across the plain nearby, carrying traffic around Granada and on towards the coast. Where the development stops, a patchwork of irrigated plots and field tracks takes over.

Armilla has changed from a farming village into a busy part of the Granada metropolitan area, and that change is easy to read from above. The Armilla map poster places an old centre, modern growth and a working airfield side by side. On a clear day the Sierra Nevada is in view to the southeast, though on the print the focus stays on the town.

01

Air base runway

The airfield's long, straight runway is the boldest line on the map, stretching out beside the town with its taxiways and service roads.

02

Historic centre

A small cluster of irregular streets around the parish church marks the original village inside the later suburban growth.

03

Edge of the Vega

Irrigated fields and farm tracks from Granada's fertile plain fill the spaces around town and soften the edges of the print.
