The map

About this Bang Rak map poster

Bang Rak is a central district of Bangkok, on the east bank of the Chao Phraya. On the map, the river curves along its western edge. From there, a set of long parallel roads runs inland: Charoen Krung near the water, then Surawong, Silom and the start of Sathon. Between them lies a dense web of small sois.

Charoen Krung, built in the 1860s, was one of the first modern paved roads in Thailand, and the older riverside quarter still shows the pattern of trading houses, churches and historic hotels along it. Further inland, Silom became a financial and office district, marked on the map by larger plots and the elevated line of the BTS.

A Bang Rak map poster holds two Bangkoks in one frame. There is the river, piers and fine grain of the old waterfront, and there is the broad, regular pattern of the business streets. Lumphini Park sits just beyond the district's eastern edge as a large open square.
