The map

About this Bang Rakam map poster

Bang Rakam is a district town in Phitsanulok province, in the lower north of Thailand, on the Yom River. The surrounding land belongs to the wide central plain, where rivers meander slowly and the terrain barely rises. From above, the town appears as a strip of streets along the water, with fields stretching out on all sides.

The Yom shapes the map with loose bends and old channels, and roads tend to follow the higher ground beside it. Beyond the built-up area, the landscape breaks into a patchwork of rice paddies, ponds and small canals. A Bang Rakam map poster shows how closely settlement and river are tied in this part of the country.

The district is well known in Thailand for its relationship with seasonal floods. Low-lying land here is used as a flood retention area during the rainy season, an approach often called the Bang Rakam model, in which farming calendars are adjusted around the water. It is a place where the river sets the rhythm of the year.

01

Yom River

The river bends through and beside the town, and its curves form the backbone of the map, with streets lined up along the banks.

02

Floodplain fields

Rice paddies and ponds surround the town, adding a soft, fragmented texture beyond the denser street pattern at the centre.

03

Riverside roads

Main routes run parallel to the water on slightly raised ground, creating long lines that echo the course of the Yom.
