The map

About this Chiang Mai map poster

Chiang Mai is one of the most recognisable cities to see from above. At its centre lies a nearly perfect square: the old city, founded by King Mangrai in 1296 as the capital of the Lanna kingdom and bounded by a moat and fragments of brick wall. Inside the square, lanes and small streets fill the space around dozens of temple compounds.

To the west, the mountain of Doi Suthep rises abruptly behind the city, with the temple of Wat Phra That Doi Suthep on its slopes and Chiang Mai University at its foot. To the east, the Ping River runs north to south under a series of bridges, and the old trading district around Warorot Market lies between the river and the moat.

Beyond these, ring roads circle the city in widening loops, and the airport sits just southwest of the old town. A Chiang Mai map poster shows all of this in one frame: the square, the river, the ring roads, and the sudden edge where the city stops and the mountain begins.

01

The moated square

The moat and what remains of the walls enclose an almost perfect square. It is a crisp geometric shape at the heart of the map and the first thing most people recognise.

02

Doi Suthep

The mountain rises to the west, and the streets stop sharply at its base. The winding road up to the temple is one of the few lines that climbs into the forest.

03

Ping River

The river runs along the east side of the centre and is crossed by several bridges. Its curve balances the hard geometry of the moat and the ring roads.

Why Chiang Mai

A map that means something

Chiang Mai stays with people: those who lived here as remote workers or students, couples who travelled through Northern Thailand, and families from the city itself. The square and the mountain edge make the map instantly recognisable, even at a small size.
