The map
Kēng Tung sits in a valley in the east of Myanmar's Shan State, not far from the borders with Thailand, Laos and China. From above, the town is built around Naung Tung, a lake near its centre. Streets curl around the water and climb onto the low hills that surround it, and farmland and rice fields fill the lower ground beyond.
For centuries the town was the seat of a Shan principality, and the remains of its old walls and gates can still be traced around the centre. Monasteries and pagodas occupy several hilltops, and a large standing Buddha statue looks over the town from one of them. On the map, these hills give the street pattern its uneven, winding character.
Roads lead out of the valley toward Tachileik on the Thai border and deeper into the Shan hills, following ridges and river valleys. A Kēng Tung map poster shows a small town shaped almost entirely by its terrain. The lake forms a quiet centre, and the surrounding slopes decide where the streets can go.
The lake near the centre is the town's main landmark on the map, a smooth open shape with streets and buildings wrapped around its shores.
Monasteries and pagodas stand on several low hills around the town, and the roads that climb them add curving loops to the street plan.
Rice fields and farmland fill the valley floor around the town, and forested ridges rise on all sides to define the edge of the map.

Why Kēng Tung
