The map
Bergen op Zoom sits on the Brabantse Wal, the steep edge where the higher sandy ground of North Brabant falls to the low clay polders by the Eastern Scheldt. The map shows this line clearly. To the east lie woods and heathland; to the west, flat reclaimed land with straight dikes, drainage ditches and the harbour channel leading out to the water.
For centuries the town was one of the strongest fortresses in the Low Countries. It withstood Spanish sieges in 1588 and 1622 before falling to the French in 1747. The ramparts have mostly gone, but the old centre keeps a compact medieval plan around the Grote Markt, with the Markiezenhof palace and the Gevangenpoort gate among its landmarks.
Beyond the old town, the plan widens into twentieth-century neighbourhoods and an industrial zone toward the water. Across the Netherlands the town is also known for its carnival, one of the largest in the south. A Bergen op Zoom map poster holds all of this in one frame: the ridge, the polders, the old core and the harbour.
The ridge running north to south marks the boundary between sand and clay, visible on the map as the change from winding woodland paths to straight polder roads.
Around the Grote Markt, narrow streets keep a medieval layout, with the Markiezenhof and the Gevangenpoort among the historic buildings in this dense, irregular core.
West of the centre, the harbour and a network of dikes and drainage lines stretch toward the Eastern Scheldt, a precise geometry that suits a minimalist print.
