The map

About this Chon Buri map poster

Chon Buri lies on the eastern side of the Gulf of Thailand, southeast of Bangkok, and is the capital of the province of the same name. The town follows the coastline, with Sukhumvit Road, the long highway along the eastern seaboard, running roughly parallel to the shore. Between road and sea lies the older part of town, with its market streets, piers and fishing areas.

The province has become one of the most industrialised in Thailand, with ports, factories and resorts along the eastern seaboard, but the town itself keeps a provincial character. It is best known for its annual buffalo racing festival, a tradition that has been held for more than a century. The beach at Bang Saen lies a short distance to the south.

A Chon Buri map poster highlights the relationship between coast and road. The shoreline forms a gently curving edge, piers extend into shallow water, the older streets crowd close to the sea, and the newer grid extends inland toward the hills. The result is an image of a coastal town that has grown steadily along a single important route.

01

Sukhumvit Road

The main highway of the eastern seaboard runs along the town parallel to the coast, forming a long axis from which most streets branch toward the sea or inland.

02

Waterfront piers

Along the shoreline, piers and jetties extend into the shallow waters of the gulf, breaking the smooth coastline into short, thin lines.

03

Inland expansion

East of the highway, newer housing estates and roads spread over flatter land toward the hills, with a more regular layout than the older coastal core.
