The map

About this Fnidek map poster

Fnidek lies on Morocco's Mediterranean coast in the far north of the country, just south of the border with the Spanish city of Ceuta. On a map, the town is squeezed between the sea and steep hills. A long, open beach runs in front of it. Streets climb from the waterfront into denser neighbourhoods on the slopes, and the coastal road runs north toward the border and south toward Tetouan.

Fnidek was known in the Spanish colonial period as Castillejos. For decades its economy has been tied to the border and cross-border trade. In summer it also draws Moroccan holidaymakers to its beaches and to the resorts along this stretch of coast. The mountains behind it are part of the landscape that runs across northern Morocco toward the Rif.

A Fnidek map poster shows the tension between water and slope. The beach gives the design a long, curving edge. Streets pack tightly into the space between the shore and the hills, and the few roads out follow the coast. For a small town, it has a clear and memorable shape.
