The map

About this Harihar map poster

Harihar lies in Davanagere district in central Karnataka, on the bank of the Tungabhadra River. On a map, the wide river and its sandy banks form the town's clearest edge. The main road and railway cross the water on long bridges, and the older town streets gather near the river, while newer areas and industry spread inland.

The town takes its name from Harihara, a form that combines Vishnu and Shiva. The Harihareshwara temple, built in the Hoysala period in the thirteenth century, is its best-known monument. Harihar also has a long industrial history, with large factories on the edges of the town and across the river.

A Harihar map poster shows this mix of old and new. Near the temple, the historic centre forms a dense cluster of narrow streets. Around it, the railway and highway cut straight lines, industrial sites take up large blocks, and the river curves through the frame, giving the design a strong natural line.
