The map

About this Isesaki map poster

Isesaki lies on the northern Kantō Plain in Gunma Prefecture, on ground so level that the map reads almost as pure pattern. There are no hills to bend the streets. Instead the city spreads evenly in every direction, a fine mesh of lanes broken by rail lines, arterial roads and small rivers flowing southward.

That flatness makes the transitions visible. Dense residential blocks give way to patches of farmland, factory sites and newer suburban grids, and the southern edge approaches the Tone River, one of Japan's largest. Rail lines cross the city, and each station tends to gather a knot of tighter streets around it.

Isesaki was once known for meisen, a durable and colourfully patterned silk that was popular in the early twentieth century. Today it is often mentioned for its summer heat, recording some of the highest temperatures in Japan. An Isesaki map poster shows the quieter side of that story: an orderly plain of streets and rivers.

01

Even plain

Without hills or coastline, the streets spread uniformly across the sheet, producing an intricate, almost textile-like texture of small blocks and lanes.

02

Southern rivers

Smaller rivers cross the city on their way toward the Tone River, drawing thin diagonal lines through the otherwise dense street pattern.

03

Station clusters

Rail lines slice through the plain, and the areas around stations appear as tighter, busier knots within the wider mesh of the city.

A map that means something
