The map

About this Maebashi map poster

Maebashi, the capital of Gunma Prefecture, sits at the north-western edge of the Kantō Plain, where the land begins to rise toward the mountains. The Tone River runs past the western side of the centre in a wide, stony channel. To the north-east, the long, gentle slopes of Mount Akagi climb away from the city, and the map shows clearly where the plain meets the highlands.

The centre grew around Maebashi Castle, which once stood on the bank of the Tone, and the prefectural office now occupies part of its site. Small canals, including the Hirose River, run through the city in straight channels lined with willows and paths. They stand out clearly among the streets. In the Meiji era, the city was a hub of Japan's silk trade.

Maebashi calls itself a city of water, greenery and poetry, partly in honour of the poet Hagiwara Sakutarō, who was born here. A Maebashi map poster follows the Tone, the canals and the orderly grid of the centre. Toward the north, the streets thin out across the rising ground.

01

Tone River

The broad river runs along the western side of the centre, in a wide bed with gravel bars and parkland. It is one of the strongest lines on the map.

02

Hirose River canal

A narrow canal crosses the city centre between willow-lined paths and small bridges. It draws a fine thread through the surrounding grid.

03

Akagi slopes

North-east of the centre, the land rises in long, even slopes toward Mount Akagi. On the map, the city blocks give way to fields and scattered villages.
