The resort
La Plagne is not one village but a family of them. Opened in the early 1960s above the Tarentaise valley in Savoie, it grew as a series of separate stations at different altitudes, from high purpose-built centres to older villages lower down. Seen from above, these settlements appear as small, dense knots of buildings connected by winding access roads and a web of lift lines stretched across the slopes.
Between the villages lies a large open ski area climbing toward the Bellecôte glacier. The map shows it as broad terrain with few hard edges: contour, ridges and the occasional road hairpin. At one edge of the area, the Vanoise Express cable car crosses a deep valley to connect La Plagne with Les Arcs, together forming the Paradiski area, one of the larger linked ski domains in the Alps.
The resort also has an Olympic footnote. The bobsleigh and luge track for the 1992 Albertville Winter Games was built here, and its curved concrete run still traces a distinctive line down the hillside. A La Plagne map poster brings all of this together at once, the villages, the valley road below and the high ground above, which is difficult to take in from any single viewpoint on the mountain.

The track built for the 1992 Winter Games curls down the slope near the resort. Its banked turns make a thin, recognisable curve that stands apart from the straighter lift lines.
A double-deck cable car spans the valley between La Plagne and Les Arcs. On the map it is a single straight line crossing open ground, the thread that ties two resorts together.
