The map
Méchouar-Kasba is the arrondissement of Marrakesh that covers the southern part of the medina. It includes the historic Kasbah quarter and the Royal Palace. The name combines méchouar, the parade ground in front of a royal palace, and kasbah, the fortified quarter. Both are clearly visible on the map as large enclosed spaces within the dense old city.
The quarter holds some of the city's best-known monuments. There is the Saadian Tombs complex, the ruins of the El Badi Palace, and Bab Agnaou, the carved gate into the Kasbah. Around them the lanes narrow into typical medina alleys, often ending in dead ends. Walled gardens and courtyard houses fill the blocks.
A Méchouar-Kasba map poster shows a remarkable contrast. There are large rectangular palace enclosures, open parade grounds and orchards, surrounded by a fine, irregular web of alleys. The city walls trace the edge. In black and white, the density of the medina and the calm of the royal spaces create a striking image.

Around Bab Agnaou and the Saadian Tombs, narrow alleys twist and end in dead ends. They form an intricate texture typical of old Marrakesh.
The vast courtyard of the ruined sixteenth-century palace is a clear open square in the fabric of the quarter, bounded by thick walls.

Why Méchouar-Kasba
Marrakesh leaves a strong impression on everyone who walks its medina. A map of the Kasbah quarter recalls the gates, courtyards and alleys in a form that is calm and orderly on a wall.
