About this Middelburg map poster
Middelburg is the capital of Zeeland, on the former island of Walcheren in the southwest Netherlands. From above, its outline is unmistakable: the old town sits inside a ring of water shaped by former bastions, giving the city a star-like perimeter. Within it, streets run in a roughly concentric pattern around the abbey and market square.
In the seventeenth century Middelburg was a major trading city and home to a chamber of the Dutch East India Company. The abbey complex, with its tall tower known as Lange Jan, still marks the centre. The Walcheren Canal passes along the edge of town, linking it by water with Vlissingen on the coast and Veere to the north.
