Rhodes is the largest of Greece's Dodecanese islands, lying close to the Turkish coast in the southeastern Aegean. Its outline tapers from a broad centre to a sharp northern point, where the town of Rhodes sits between two seas. A backbone of hills runs down the middle, rising to Mount Attavyros in the west, and villages follow the valleys between the hills and the coast.
The medieval old town, built up by the Knights of St John, is one of the best-preserved walled towns in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On a Rhodes map poster its circuit of walls encloses a dense knot of lanes, with Mandraki harbour just outside, where the ancient Colossus is traditionally said to have stood. Around it the modern town spreads in a looser grid.
Down the east coast, the acropolis of Lindos rises on a rock above a white village and two small bays. The west coast faces the prevailing wind and is more exposed. At the southern tip, Prasonisi is joined to the island by a sandbar that separates the Aegean from the Mediterranean and is sometimes covered by winter seas.

Halfway down the east coast, a whitewashed village climbs toward the acropolis on a rocky headland, framed by small bays on either side.
Prasonisi sandbar
At the island's southern point a thin strip of sand links Rhodes to a small islet, drawing a delicate line where two seas meet at the bottom of the poster.
