About this New Amsterdam map poster
New Amsterdam stands on the eastern bank of the Berbice River in Guyana, a short distance from where the river meets the Atlantic. The Canje River joins the Berbice at the edge of town, and the land around is low coastal plain, crossed by drainage canals and trenches. On a map the town appears as a neat grid of streets running back from the riverfront.
The town was founded by the Dutch in the late eighteenth century, when the colony of Berbice moved its administrative centre downstream toward the coast. It later became an important British colonial town. Today it is the regional capital of East Berbice-Corentyne. The Berbice Bridge, a long floating crossing opened in 2008, links it to the western bank.
