The map
Nové Zámky grew around one of the most important fortresses in the region. Built by the Habsburgs in the late sixteenth century as a defence against Ottoman expansion, it had a six-pointed plan and briefly fell to the Ottomans in 1663. The fortifications were demolished in the eighteenth century, but the town that followed kept a compact centre in their place.
Today the map shows a town on the flat plain of the lower Nitra river, with the river channel curving along one side. The centre is dense and slightly irregular, and around it spread newer housing estates and broad roads. Railway lines converge from several directions, because Nové Zámky is one of the main rail junctions in southern Slovakia.
A Nové Zámky map poster brings those layers together: the river, the fanning tracks and the tight core where the fortress once stood. The town was heavily damaged in the Second World War, largely because of that railway junction, and much of its present fabric dates from the rebuilding that followed. The map is a record of that long, turbulent history.

The river curves along the edge of town across the level plain, giving the composition one soft, flowing line against the straighter streets.
Several lines converge on the station and fan out again, a pattern of long curving tracks that is unusually prominent for a town of this size.
