The map
Pailin is a town in western Cambodia, close to the border with Thailand, set among low hills and forest. From above, it is a loose arrangement of streets around a market centre, with roads following valleys and curving around rising ground. Small streams run through the area, and the surrounding land is covered in farms and patches of woodland.
The town is known for gem mining, especially rubies and sapphires, which drew miners and traders for generations. Pailin also has a difficult recent history as a former Khmer Rouge stronghold, and it rejoined national life in the late 1990s. Phnom Yat, a hill topped by a pagoda, overlooks the town and is one of its best-known landmarks.
A Pailin map poster shows a town shaped by terrain. Roads bend and meet in the valleys, the market area forms the densest cluster, and the hills leave open space around it. The composition is calm and uneven, reflecting a place that grew with the land.
A hill topped by a pagoda rises close to the centre, and the map shows the streets bending around its base and climbing toward the summit.
The busiest part of Pailin forms a compact network of streets around the market, the heart of a town built on trade.
Roads lead west toward the Thai border and east toward Battambang, drawing long lines that frame the town within the region.
