The map
Pouso Alegre lies in southern Minas Gerais, in the rolling foothills of the Serra da Mantiqueira. From above, the town spreads across low hills around the valley of the Sapucaí-Mirim river, whose meanders wind across the floodplain. The Fernão Dias highway, linking São Paulo with Belo Horizonte, passes close by and shapes much of the town's newer growth.
The name means 'happy resting place', a reference to its origins as a stop for travellers crossing the region. Today it is one of the main commercial and industrial centres of southern Minas, helped by its position on that busy highway corridor.
A Pouso Alegre map poster combines a river that refuses to run straight with streets that climb and curve over the hills. The centre is compact and fairly regular, but the outer districts follow the terrain, giving the composition a loose, organic outline.
The river loops across low ground near the town, its bends and oxbows adding a soft, flowing line to the map.
The highway between São Paulo and Belo Horizonte passes the town in a long sweep, framing newer districts and industrial areas.
Outer neighbourhoods curve with the terrain, their streets bending around hills and giving the edges of the poster an organic shape.
