The map
Taubaté lies in the Paraíba do Sul valley in São Paulo state, roughly midway between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The broad valley runs between two mountain ranges, the Serra do Mar and the Serra da Mantiqueira, and the city occupies its floor. From above, the Via Dutra highway cuts across the map in a long line, with the historic centre on one side and newer districts extending outward.
Founded in the seventeenth century, Taubaté is one of the oldest cities in the valley, and its original core still shows a compact pattern of streets around churches and squares. Industrial areas and planned residential districts spread across the surrounding land in larger blocks. To the north, the Paraíba do Sul river winds across the lowlands.
Taubaté is the birthplace of Monteiro Lobato, the writer behind the children's stories of the Sítio do Picapau Amarelo, and his former farm is now a museum dedicated to his work. A Taubaté map poster shows the city in its valley setting: the highway, the old centre and the river plain beyond.
The main highway between São Paulo and Rio crosses the city in a long, confident line. It divides the map and links Taubaté to the rest of the valley.
The older streets form a tight, irregular grid around squares and churches. They contrast with the broader, more regular layouts of the newer districts around them.
The river winds across the flat land north of the city. Its curves and open floodplain give the composition a soft, natural edge.
