The map
Prakhon Chai is a town and district in Buriram Province, in the lower Isan region of northeastern Thailand. The town is laid out along its main roads, with a small grid of streets near the centre and residential lanes reaching out into the fields. Around it the land is flat and largely given over to rice farming, divided into small, irregular paddies.
The district is known for its ancient Khmer heritage. Prasat Mueang Tam, a sanctuary of sandstone and laterite set within four L-shaped ponds, stands within it, and the hilltop temple of Phanom Rung lies close by. The name Prakhon Chai is also attached to a celebrated group of bronze sculptures found in the area in the 1960s and now held in museums worldwide.
A Prakhon Chai map poster combines a modern market town with the traces of a much older landscape. Straight roads form the centre, paddy boundaries create a fine texture around them, and ancient reservoirs appear as clean geometric shapes, above all the large rectangular baray beside Mueang Tam.
The Khmer sanctuary sits within an enclosure of four L-shaped ponds, with a large rectangular reservoir nearby, forming unusually precise shapes on the map.
Paddies spread across the flat land around the town, and their small, irregular plots create a soft, detailed texture that fills the open areas of the print.
The main streets meet in a compact centre, from which roads lead out to surrounding villages and south towards the temples of the district.
