The map

About this Seevetal map poster

Seevetal is not a single town but a municipality formed in 1972 from a group of villages just south of Hamburg, in Lower Saxony. On the map it appears as several separate settlements, among them Hittfeld, Maschen and Meckelfeld, each with its own small centre and residential streets, spread across fields and woods rather than joined into one continuous area.

The river Seeve, which gives the municipality its name, runs northward through the area toward the Elbe. Major motorways cross the landscape, and Maschen is home to one of the largest railway marshalling yards in Europe, which shows up on the map as a long, dense bundle of parallel tracks, one of the most distinctive shapes in the region.

A Seevetal map poster shows how these villages sit together, with the river, the motorways and the rail yard linking them. It suits residents who identify with their own village as much as the whole, and commuters who know the area as the green edge of Hamburg. The composition is unusual: several small centres instead of a single core.

01

Maschen rail yard

A huge marshalling yard stretches through the area as a long band of parallel tracks, an extraordinary geometric shape that stands out immediately on the poster.

02

River Seeve

The small river winds north toward the Elbe, its thin line connecting the villages and giving the municipality its name.

03

Separate village centres

Hittfeld, Maschen, Meckelfeld and the other villages appear as distinct clusters of streets surrounded by fields and woods, rather than one continuous town.
