The map

About this Waterloo map poster

Waterloo lies just south of Brussels in Walloon Brabant. The town grew along the old main road running south from the capital, which still forms its long central spine. From above, residential streets branch off it into leafy neighbourhoods of detached houses and gardens. The Sonian Forest reaches down toward the northern edge.

The name is known worldwide because of the battle of June 1815, which ended Napoleon's rule. The inn Wellington used as his headquarters is now a museum in the town centre. The battlefield itself, with the Lion's Mound, lies a short distance to the south.

A Waterloo map poster shows a clear main axis, a spreading network of quiet suburban streets and a sharp transition to forest and open farmland. That makes a balanced composition with a strong line down the centre and soft green edges.

The main road

The historic route south from Brussels runs straight through the town. Waterloo's centre and much of its street plan are organised along this axis.

02

Sonian Forest edge

Beech forest reaches toward the north of the town. It forms a large, unbroken area that frames the built-up streets.

03

Fields toward the battlefield

South of town, the streets give way to open farmland. The 1815 battlefield lies across this rolling ground.
