About this Wedel map poster
Wedel lies on the north bank of the Elbe, just beyond Hamburg's western city limits, where the river widens on its way to the North Sea. On a map the Elbe dominates the southern edge of the frame. Its broad channel and shoreline contrast sharply with the grid of residential streets to the north.
The town is known for Willkomm-Höft, a ship greeting station at the Schulauer Fährhaus that salutes passing ocean vessels with their national anthem. Wedel is also the birthplace of the sculptor Ernst Barlach, and a Roland statue stands in its old market square.
