Te mapa
Akureyri lies near the head of Eyjafjörður, Iceland's longest fjord, and the map is shaped by that long body of water. The town runs along the western shore, its streets climbing a steep hillside in terraces. To the south, the delta of the Eyjafjarðará river spreads into flat land where the airport's runway sits almost in the fjord itself.
Often called the capital of the north, Akureyri is the largest town outside Iceland's capital region. Its church, Akureyrarkirkja, stands above the centre at the top of a long flight of steps, and the botanical garden, Lystigarðurinn, is one of the world's most northerly. Mountains rise behind the town, including the Hlíðarfjall ski area.
An Akureyri map poster shows a place pressed between water and slope. The shoreline is clean and long, the Oddeyri peninsula juts into the fjord, and the contour-like pattern of streets hints at the steep ground. Printed in a quiet palette, the fjord becomes a broad plane of negative space against the lines of the town.
The fjord runs the full length of the map, a long, narrow band of water that gives the town its linear shape along the western shore.
South of the centre, the airport's runway stretches across the flat delta of the Eyjafjarðará river, a straight line set right beside the water.
Residential streets step up the slope in curving tiers above the harbour, their parallel lines echoing the steep terrain behind the town.
