Te mapa
Al Ghurayfah lies in the Wadi al Hayat, a long valley in the Fezzan region of southwestern Libya. The valley is a string of oases: a narrow green band where groundwater makes farming and settlement possible, bordered by sand sea on one side and rocky plateau on the other. On a map, that shape is unmistakable. Everything runs in a single long line, and emptiness lies beyond it.
The town itself is compact, a cluster of streets and walled plots next to palm groves and irrigated fields. A main road runs along the valley, linking the town to the other oases in the chain. It is the strongest line on the poster, with smaller streets and farm tracks branching off it on both sides before fading into open desert.
The Wadi al Hayat has been inhabited for thousands of years. It was once the heartland of the Garamantes, an ancient Saharan people who built irrigation systems here. An Al Ghurayfah map poster shows a settlement defined by its setting: a thin thread of life drawn across a very large and quiet landscape, simple on paper and striking on a wall.
Settlement and farmland follow a narrow band along the valley floor. The map has a strong horizontal composition with almost nothing on either side.
A single road connects the oasis towns of the Wadi al Hayat. It runs through the poster as its clearest and longest line.
Sand to one side and stony plateau to the other surround the town. They leave broad empty areas that make the streets stand out sharply.
