Allendale is a township in Ottawa County, west of Grand Rapids, best known as home to the main campus of Grand Valley State University. From above, the campus stands out clearly: a large area of academic buildings, residence halls, parking and green space, next to a small town grid and wide stretches of farmland.
The Grand River runs along the east side of the campus, and wooded ravines cut down toward the water. Surrounding the university are the straight roads of rural Michigan, laid out in a regular square-mile pattern, with subdivisions and apartment complexes filling in closer to campus.
