Te mapa
Alsip is a village in Cook County on the southwestern edge of Chicago. Its map follows the regional pattern: straight section-line roads at regular intervals, with residential blocks and industrial parks filling the squares between them. The Calumet-Sag Channel crosses the area, a straight man-made waterway linking the Illinois waterways with the Calumet region.
Large cemeteries take up a significant share of land in and around Alsip, appearing on the map as wide open spaces with their own looping internal paths. The Tri-State Tollway runs through the village, and its interchanges add curves to the otherwise rectangular grid. Stony Creek and small parks add a few irregular green lines.
The village grew around brickmaking and later became a mix of homes, logistics and light industry. A Alsip map poster shows this layout clearly: a disciplined Midwestern grid broken by the channel, the tollway and the quiet expanses of the cemeteries.
The straight line of the Calumet-Sag Channel cuts across the village, an early twentieth-century engineered waterway that is one of the strongest features on the print.
Several large cemeteries create big open shapes with curving interior roads, a surprising amount of calm space within a suburban grid.
Major roads run at regular mile intervals, dividing the village into squares filled with residential streets, industrial blocks and parks.
