Te mapa
Apatity lies on the Kola Peninsula in Murmansk Oblast, north of the Arctic Circle. On a map it sits on the low ground between the long shoreline of Lake Imandra to the west and the Khibiny massif rising to the east. The town was built mainly in the Soviet period, and its layout shows it: straight avenues, large residential blocks and generous spacing between buildings.
The town is named after apatite, the phosphate mineral mined in the Khibiny, and it grew as a base for that industry. Apatity is also known as a centre of science, home to the Kola Science Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences, which studies the geology, ecology and climate of the far north.
An Apatity map poster puts an ordered, planned grid in a wild setting. The regular blocks sit on one side of the frame, the indented lake shore on the other, and the lines of rail and road head toward the mountains. In black and white, the town looks like a careful drawing placed on a blank sheet of tundra and forest.
One of the largest lakes on the Kola Peninsula lies just west of town, its irregular shoreline and islands forming a broad, detailed edge on the map.
Wide avenues frame large residential blocks laid out in a regular pattern, a clear example of mid-century Soviet town planning.
Roads and rail lines run east toward the Khibiny mountains and the mining towns there, tying Apatity to the industry that gave it its name.

Koteā ko Apatity
Apatity is a place people remember strongly: polar nights, research work, family years in the north. A clean map of its blocks and the lake shore holds those memories without extra decoration.
