Te mapa
Ayaviri lies at nearly 3,900 metres on the altiplano of the Puno region in southern Peru. It is the capital of Melgar province and sits beside the Ayaviri river, in open grassland grazed by sheep, cattle and alpacas. On a map the town is a neat grid of blocks centred on a main square, set in a very wide and mostly empty landscape.
The town is known in Peru for its livestock and cheese. A large colonial church faces its plaza. The streets follow the Spanish colonial plan of straight lines and square blocks, which makes Ayaviri look especially clean from above. Beyond the last blocks, roads cross the plain southeast toward Juliaca and northwest toward Cusco.
An Ayaviri map poster captures the contrast at the heart of the altiplano: a small, orderly town inside an immense open plain. The river adds a softer, curving line to the composition. The long roads leading away show how great the distances are in this high part of the Andes.
Straight streets and regular blocks spread from the main square in a classic Spanish colonial plan that looks especially crisp in black and white.
The river winds along the edge of the town, its meandering course contrasting with the right angles of the street grid.
Long, straight routes lead across the open plain toward Juliaca and Cusco, thin lines that carry the town's reach far into the high grassland.

Koteā ko Ayaviri
Ayaviri maps appeal to people from the Puno region, to Peruvians who have moved to Lima or abroad, and to travellers who crossed the altiplano between Cusco and Lake Titicaca. The clear grid and open surroundings make a restful image.
