Te mapa
Blue Island lies just beyond the southern edge of Chicago, in Cook County, Illinois. Its name comes from its geography: the older part of the city sits on a ridge rising above the flat former lakebed of the Chicago area, and early travellers said the wooded high ground looked like a blue island on the horizon. That ridge is still visible in the street pattern today.
Water and rail define the city's edges. The Little Calumet River and the Calumet Sag Channel run along the south side, curving lines that cut across the regular suburban grid. Blue Island has long been a railway junction, and multiple lines, including Metra routes into downtown Chicago, pass through or near the city, adding long diagonal lines.
The historic centre follows Western Avenue along the ridge, with older commercial buildings and residential blocks on either side. A Blue Island map poster shows how this small city is arranged: its streets fitted to the ridge, its borders set by waterways and its landscape shaped by the railways that helped it grow.

The Little Calumet River and the Cal-Sag Channel trace the southern edge of the city, their curves contrasting with the street grid.
Several rail lines cross the city, creating long diagonal and parallel lines across the map and linking it to downtown Chicago.

Koteā ko Blue Island
Blue Island appeals to people who grew up on the South Side and in the south suburbs, or who commute into the city by rail. A map of it shows a place with a clear identity of its own, not just an extension of Chicago.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, and add a date that matters. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand; Blueprint suits the railways and canals.
