Te mapa
Bobangui lies in the Lobaye prefecture in the southwest of the Central African Republic, southwest of Bangui, in a region of tropical forest and rivers. On a map it is a modest place: a handful of roads and tracks, with houses gathered along them and clearings opening in the surrounding woodland. The pattern is sparse, and each line carries more weight as a result.
The village holds an important place in the country's history. It was the birthplace of Barthélemy Boganda, the independence leader regarded as the founding father of the Central African Republic, and of Jean-Bédel Bokassa, who later ruled the country. Few places of its size appear so often in the national story.
A Bobangui map poster is necessarily minimal. A few roads meet and part again, and footpaths run out into the countryside. That simplicity suits the black-and-white style, and it keeps the focus on the place itself, a small forest settlement that played an unexpected role in the history of a nation.
The roads through Bobangui run as long lines across forested country, linking the village to neighbouring settlements in Lobaye.
Houses gather along the main tracks, not in blocks, so the map shows a linear, open settlement pattern typical of the region.
Bobangui was the birthplace of Barthélemy Boganda, the father of Central African independence, which gives this small map a significance beyond its size.
