Te mapa
Choi Hung Estate is in the Wong Tai Sin District of Kowloon, one of the oldest surviving public housing estates in Hong Kong. It was built in the early 1960s. From above, it is a clear arrangement of long, parallel residential blocks with courtyards, playgrounds and a car park roof between them. Busy roads run along its edges, and Choi Hung MTR station lies just beside it.
The name means rainbow, and the blocks are painted in a gradient of bright colours that has become one of the most photographed views in the city. The basketball court on the car park roof, framed by rainbow-coloured walls, is particularly well known. The estate is still a working home for thousands of residents.
A Choi Hung Estate map poster takes the colour away and leaves the geometry: the repeating rhythm of the blocks, the open spaces between them and the heavy road lines. In black and white the estate reads almost like an architectural plan, and its structure is especially clear.
The long residential buildings are arranged in regular rows. They create a strong, repeating pattern that dominates the map.
The well-known basketball courts sit on top of the estate's car park. They appear as small open rectangles between the blocks.
Busy arterial roads border the estate, with the MTR station beside it. They frame the housing with thick, clear lines.
