Te mapa
Comayagua sits on the floor of a wide valley in central Honduras, and its historic centre is one of the clearest Spanish colonial grids in the country. Straight streets meet at right angles around a central plaza, with churches placed at key points in the layout. Beyond the old core, newer neighbourhoods spread out across the flat land, and highways run off toward the mountains that frame the valley.
The city was the capital of Honduras for more than three centuries until the government moved to Tegucigalpa in 1880. Its cathedral holds a clock often cited as one of the oldest still working in the Americas, and during Holy Week residents create elaborate carpets of coloured sawdust along the streets of the centre for the processions.
A Comayagua map poster highlights that careful colonial order: the regular blocks, the plaza at the centre and the evenly spaced church squares, set against the looser growth of the modern city and the open land of the valley. It is a composition with a clear historic logic that reads well in monochrome.
The historic core follows a regular grid of square blocks around the main plaza and cathedral, the most orderly and densely drawn part of the map.
Several colonial churches and their small plazas break the grid at intervals, creating open spaces that stand out as pauses in the street pattern.
Outside the centre, the city thins into newer districts, farmland and highways, all laid across the wide, flat valley between surrounding mountain ranges.

Koteā ko Comayagua
Comayagua matters to Hondurans far beyond its size, as the former capital and the setting of its Holy Week carpets. A map of its grid is a meaningful gift for anyone from the city or the wider valley.
