Te mapa
Crown Point is the county seat of Lake County in northwest Indiana, south of the industrial lakeshore around Gary and Hammond. Its map is centred on a classic Midwestern courthouse square, where the 1878 Lake County Courthouse, known locally as the Grand Old Lady, stands in the middle of a regular grid that extends evenly in every direction.
The town is also remembered for a famous episode in 1934, when the gangster John Dillinger escaped from the Lake County Jail here, reportedly using a fake gun. The old jail building still stands near the square. For decades Crown Point was also known as a place couples came to marry quickly, earning a reputation as a marriage town.
A Crown Point map poster shows an orderly, legible plan: straight streets meeting at right angles around the square, newer subdivisions with curving roads on the outskirts, and highways passing to the east. The flat land of the former prairie keeps the geometry clean, which suits a minimal black and white style well.
The 1878 Lake County Courthouse sits at the centre of a square framed by streets on four sides, the natural focal point of the whole map.
The old Lake County Jail near the square is where John Dillinger made his well-known 1934 escape, a story still tied closely to the town.
Streets extend from the square in a tidy rectilinear pattern across flat ground, before giving way to curving suburban roads at the edges.
