Te mapa
Danville is the seat of Vermilion County in east-central Illinois, close to the Indiana line. The Vermilion River winds through the city, and its curves and wooded banks interrupt what is otherwise a fairly regular Midwestern street grid. Bridges carry the main roads across the valley.
The city grew in the nineteenth century as a regional centre, and Abraham Lincoln worked here as a lawyer while travelling the Eighth Judicial Circuit. Interstate 74 passes along the northern side, and railway lines cross the town, adding long diagonal strokes to the map.
Beyond the edges, the prairie begins, with long straight section roads dividing the farmland into squares. A Danville map poster shows the older downtown blocks, the river's meandering line and the orderly countryside that surrounds the city.
The river winds through the city in a series of curves, cutting across the grid and giving the map its most natural, flowing line.
The historic centre follows a traditional rectangular grid, the densest and most regular part of the composition near the river.
Outside the city, straight rural roads divide the land into large squares, a quiet geometric frame typical of Illinois farmland.
